Southern Italian design celebrated at London Design Festival for the first time
Design in South Italy presents the craftsmanship and creativity of designers working in Calabria, Campania, Puglia and Sicilia at London Design Festival for the first time in 2015. An initiative from the Italian Trade Commission, Design in South Italy will showcase work by 15 exhibitors at Super Brands London from 24 to 27 September.
While design brands from the north of Italy rightly have worldwide recognition, there is a wealth of exciting ideas and talent coming out of the south, too. Design in South Italy is an opportunity to discover new work by some of region’s best designers and studios, and to get to know its unique creative personality. The designers and studios coming to Design in South Italy at Super Brands London represent the full spectrum of disciplines.
There’s a sense of playfulness alongside dedication to craftsmanship at Kiasmo, a studio established in 2011 and based in Ruffano, a town in the centre of the Salento Peninsula. Its handmade ceramics collection has expressive illustrations by Vincenzo D’Alba, lending a surreal mood to the functionality of plates. The Leaves collection – powder-coated steel tables and chairs designed by architect Ugo La Pietra – shows similar lightness of touch and personality at Altamura-based brand De Mura.
Based in Naples and founded in 2009, ZETAE 123 Collective is an industrial and interior design studio that works and exhibits worldwide. Inspired by Dumas’ The Three Musketeers, its Moschetter stools (Athos, Porthos and Aramis) are designed to tilt, rock and roll together on their robust and brightly lacquered steel legs. Its Isacco desk is held together just by a friction belt, making it quick and easy to assemble.
Also found in Naples, interior and product designer Barbara Calvo’s pieces blend a minimalist aesthetic with striking scale; resulting in furniture and objects with refined presence. In choosing to work in natural materials such as iron, Calvo gives her bold designs warmth and depth.
Designer Giuliano Ricciardi’s D-Lab Studio is based in Taranto. Its Goccia suspended ceramic containers have a simple, organic shape, reminiscent of a water droplet or, in the case of the table version, a flying saucer. Made in ceramic and oak and fitted with LED lights, the hanging containers are suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
Angelo Cavallaro brings Cambusa – his three striking, wall-mounted cabinets – to Super Brands London 2015. His workshop is at the base of Mount Etna in Sicily, where he creates all his pieces using the finest woods. Similar dedication to craftsmanship is seen in the bold Optic table set by Marzoarreda. The intricate pattern is achieved through individually placed pieces of iroko and lime wood – up to 20,000 pieces in the largest size. Lamberti Décor, meanwhile, demonstrates the precision metalwork this long-standing family company is known for in Italy. Its Star collection sees intricately cut aluminum star forms making up the bases and legs of chairs and tables.
Other exhibitors showing at Design in South Italy at Super Brands London 2015 include cardboard furniture pioneers Corvasce, who reveal the potential of this eco-friendly material through elegant, unexpected tables, chairs and mirrors, designer Valentina De Carolis presenting her exquisite, contemporary vases in porcelain and metal, and Woodtec, with its pendulum-like Wannabe mirror.
Prospettica Design is showing its Poggio Stools and industrial-inspired Fuedi lights, both by Mario D’Aquino. Puntolargo, which specialises in contemporary use of traditional craft techniques, presents its opulent Microcosmo bed set and three playful Wave stools. Young Naples-based studio Lune Design is showing its striking and considered umbrella stand called Raining Flowers and the futuristic Tzeno wall shelf made in wood and Corian. Another brand with an innovative edge is Telese Arredo, a kitchen specialist showing compact, freestanding units.
The Design in South Italy stand at Super Brands London 2015 is designed by Italian architect Diego Amadei and includes a striking mirror installation by Italian artist Alfredo Pirri. The stand is sponsored by Italian furniture brand Natuzzi.
The Italian Trade Commission (ITC) is committed to developing, facilitating and promoting Italian trade relations overseas, as well as the image of Made in Italy around the world.
‘The ITC has chosen Super Brands London for its ability to present to UK professionals new trends in interiors products. We want to showcase and celebrate the talented designers coming from the south of Italy, giving them the global stage they deserve. The products exhibited combine skills and craftsmanship, attention to detail and a design inspired by their places of origin.’
Fortunato Celi Zullo, director of the Italian Trade Commission in London.
